Introduction by Councillor Genevieve Hibbs

Welcome to the Directory of Places of Worship in the London Borough of Hounslow – one of the several notable projects run by the Hounslow Friends of Faith.

The rich diversity of faiths and cultures in our borough is something we are rightly proud of in Hounslow. Being on Heathrow’s doorstep means we are the gateway to Britain, which brings both challenges and opportunities.

For many people who arrive in the borough, their faith can be a reassuring anchor in new and unusual surroundings. Not only does it provide them with spiritual strength, but it offers a way of integrating into the community through the networks that exist in faith organisations.

The ability of different faiths and communities to live and work together is a testament to both the willingness of newcomers to integrate, and the warmness of the welcome from the local community.

Faith groups play a key role in this integration, not just for those who are new to the country, but also between each other, thanks to the work of the Friends of Faith. Common belief in the need to respect, understand and tolerate each other allows these faiths to live harmoniously together.

This directory will not only allow people to find places of worship, it will encourage people to visit such places where visitors are warmly welcomed and information shared. It also serves as a useful learning tool for schools, helping teachers to arrange visits for students to find out more about the different faiths that surround them.

The Council is keen on working closely with the different faith communities in the borough in order to find out how better to serve them, and to explore ways of working together to help those who would benefit from shared expertise.

I hope this directory will help reinforce the good relationship between both the Council and the faith communities, and among the faith communities themselves.

Foreword

The present directory provides the names and contact details of the places of worship in the Borough. Where made available, additional details such as activities and times of worship, have been included as provided. All these places of worship are listed alphabetically by name in the Index of this Directory.

It has been preferred not to provide a short description of the different faith traditions as it seemed better that an individual enquirer contact a specific faith group and let this group speak for itself. Nor have the different faith traditions been grouped within general categories (e.g. Christian, Muslim etc.). In this, too, it has been thought better to respect the views of the groups concerned as to which group they consider themselves to belong.

This directory includes in a separate section a list of useful addresses of centres of meditation and spirituality as well as of bodies that promote interfaith dialogue. It cannot claim to be comprehensive in terms of its coverage of faith organizations. We hope to include changes as needed.

Although this directory contains data of places of worship in our Borough we are conscious of the many people who do not frequent these places for one reason or another. The last census reveals that in the Borough 13.46% of the population have stated that they have no religion and 7.56% did not state their religion if they have any. We were interested in providing a service to the general public who may want to visit a place of worship to seek information about a particular faith. But we are more interested in all the residents of the Borough living as good neighbours, promoting community cohesion and living in harmony with each other and with the wider world.

We would like to thank those faith organizations who have sent us details of their place of worship. We thank also Mr Neville Ransley who has produced the layout of this publication. We are grateful to PC Robert Bell, the recently retired Borough Faith Liaison police officer, for providing us with a list of initial contacts that enabled us to proceed with the project. Thanks also to the London Borough of Hounslow for allowing us to print the map in the original booklet showing the various places of worship. We thank especially the Community Development Foundation for totally funding this project.
